Real experiences from real travelers
I thought the photos were edited but the water really is that blue. The rope swings are a blast and our guide from Yumi Tours was hilarious. Highly recommend combining this with the cultural village tour.
We took the express bus from the Port Vila cruise terminal. It was a 35-minute drive. The lagoon was refreshing and not too crowded in the morning. A must-do in Vanuatu.
The Blue Lagoon is stunning. We also visited Eden on the River which was very peaceful. Be sure to bring reef shoes as some rocks can be slippery.
The Pepeyo Cultural Village visit before the lagoon was eye-opening. Learning about the kava rituals and then jumping into the water was the perfect day.
My kids (8 and 11) loved the rope swings. The facilities are basic but clean enough. Great value for money considering the beauty of the place.
Go early! We went midday when a cruise ship was in and it was quite busy, but the water is so big there is room for everyone.
Exactly what we wanted. The water is cool and clear. The drive out there through the villages is also very interesting to see local life.
We did the full day with the turtles and the lagoon. The lunch provided was fresh and delicious. Our driver was very safe and informative.
Everything you need to know for your journey
The Blue Lagoon is primarily a freshwater spring, but because it is located near the coast, it mixes with seawater during high tide, making it slightly brackish.
It is approximately 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Port Vila, which usually takes about 35 to 45 minutes by car or bus.
You should bring swimwear, a towel, reef shoes (to protect against slippery rocks), sunscreen, insect repellent, and some local currency (Vatu) for snacks or small fees.
Most organized tours include the entrance fee. If you go independently, there is a small entry fee (usually around 500-1000 Vatu) paid to the local landowners who maintain the site.
Yes, there are basic wooden changing rooms and toilet facilities available on-site for visitors.
Absolutely. Many tour operators offer 'Cruise-Friendly' schedules that guarantee return to the ship before departure. The Express Bus is a popular option for cruise passengers.
Yes, it is very popular with families. However, some areas are deep (over 3 meters), so children and weak swimmers should use life jackets and be closely supervised.
Early morning (around 8:30 AM or 9:00 AM) is best to beat the crowds, especially on days when cruise ships are in port. Mid-afternoon is also beautiful for photography.
While you can take a local taxi or hire a car, booking a guided tour is recommended as it often includes transportation, entrance fees, and stops at other nearby attractions like Cultural Villages or Waterfalls which are harder to coordinate alone.
